A Hidden Treasure

Surrounded by Savernake  Forest, St Katharine’s Church serves a community scattered over two hamlets, six working farms, and isolated houses in the forest. The worshipping community is broadly based, and numbers of people from the surrounding area have chosen to worship in its beautiful surroundings and less frenetic atmosphere. We are a rural church, operating on a small scale that allows for the personal touch.

Next door, the thriving primary school serves a far larger area than the parish, so our “Sunday School" takes the form of “Thursday Club”, meeting at the end of school on Thursdays in term-time.

The Victorian building was originally the “estate” church and is almost unchanged except for the effects of a huge explosion in 1946; the church is much lighter for the loss of much of the original stained glass, and a side aisle became a meeting room.  The church is also equipped with toilet and kitchen. St Katharine’s is an oasis of calm, used increasingly for Quiet Days and parish “away-days”.

St Katharine's is clustered with three other churches: St Mary's, Great Bedwyn; St Michael's, Little Bedwyn; and St Nicholas', East Grafton.

For more pictures of the church, see the gallery.

This hidden treasure is worth a journey – you will find a warm welcome.
